History of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art was established in 1935 and was the first museum on the West Coast dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The Museum's founding directors, Gabriel Moure and Grace L. McCann Morley, originally envisioned a small institution devoted to contemporary art from Europe and North America. Since then, it has grown into an internationally renowned institution with a collection that encompasses a wide range of art from the mid-twentieth century to the present day.

Exhibitions Scheduled at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Nature × Humanity

The artist Neri Oxman has questioned if architectural materials, methods, and buildings are sustainable in the future. The designs upend the architectural tradition of a human-centered built environment by imagining a drastically changed future with nature as the principal customer.

Art of California

Many of the pieces in this exhibition include ordinary things, such as cardboard boxes found on the sidewalks, encyclopedias bought online, and treasured heirlooms passed down from grandparents. The paintings in this show, which are drawn from the museum's permanent collection, emphasize the materiality of the objects around us.

New Work: Wu Tsang Presents Moved by the Motion

Wu Tsang has been collaborating with Moved by the Motion since 2013, a collective of multidisciplinary artists that operate fluidly between language, movement, picture, and sound. This exhibition furthers their focus on sound's emotive power and the gravitational forces that draw people together.
